In a dedicated effort to bridge the gap between academic research and industry application, Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) hosted on July 28, 2026, a specialized workshop titled, “Empowering Innovation Intermediaries for the Blue Economy: Fostering Academia–SME Collaboration through Technology Transfer and Technology Development Zone Staff Training.”
The event was specifically designed for the staff of the IZTECH Technopark and Technology Transfer Office (TTO) professionals who play a crucial role as innovation intermediaries.
Empowering the Frontlines of Innovation
The Blue Economy represents a vital frontier for sustainable innovation, and translating university research into commercial success requires skilled facilitators. The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of IZTECH’s TTO and Technopark personnel in key areas, including:
- Blue Economy Innovation: Exploring emerging sectors, current trends, and untapped opportunities within marine and maritime industries.
- Entrepreneurship: Equipping staff with the tools to support startups and SMEs operating in water-linked sectors.
- Intellectual Property (IP): Navigating the unique IP challenges and strategies relevant to Blue Economy technologies.
“By equipping our Technology Transfer Office and Technopark staff with targeted knowledge of the Blue Economy, we are laying the groundwork for a more robust, sustainable innovation ecosystem. The Aquasphere project allows us to turn academic potential into real-world industrial solutions,” said [Dr. Gülnihal Yelken, Aquasphere project coordinator at IZTECH].

Fostering Meaningful Collaboration
Through thematic sessions and interactive discussions, participants gained practical insights into the mechanics of effective academia-SME partnerships. The training provided actionable strategies for technology transfer professionals to identify high-potential academic research and connect it with SMEs capable of bringing sustainable, water-based technologies to market.
